The Brief

Tony Keetley from TKMS approached Niddocks with an idea to build a web based application for Motor Vehicle Repair Centres and Bodyshops. The application would be an online tool to facilitate compliance with all relevant Health and Safety legislation. The revenue model would be an annual subscription. Promotion of the tool would be handled by a separate website.

The Approach

To fully appreciate the requirements Niddocks had to achieve a basic understanding of the associated legislation and methods in which compliance was achieved. From here detailed analysis was carried out on the Excel spreadsheets provided by TKMS. Each spreadsheet facilitated either assessment or record keeping for a single bodyshop, the software needed to produce the same end result but for hundreds of bodyshops.

Due to the complexity and number of features required, Niddocks developed a bespoke framework to enhance reusability of code and provide a stable and reliable platform for the application.

The purpose of many of the applications features were to create a printable document that could be displayed or kept as a record, as required by the legislation. Due to the unreliability of printing from a web browser Niddocks designed the system so all reports produced by the software were Adobe PDFs.

Conclusion

Development of the application is complete and is live and available on the Internet. Safety4Bodyshop is currently being trialed by a number of multinational paint retailers with a view to rolling out the system nationally for all their customers.
